Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maine

Good faith partial payment

Is it possible, when attempting to recover from debt, to cut down on calls from a credit card company by sending them a partial payment which would show your good faith to completely pay the debt once your hardship time is over? Would a partial payment stop a credit card company from taking further legal steps against you? Does the credit card company, by accepting a partial payment, now enter into a contract?
