Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maine

getting phone calls from law office to collect debt

I am a single mom of 2 special-needs kids owing several debts. I realize the debts need to be paid, but there is just not enough money to do it - we have SSI and TANF - food stamps are negligible - anyway, one debt has been referred to a law office (not the first time). I get at least one phone message everyday. Today they called twice in the span of 5 minutes, leaving the same message on my machine. Is this harrassment and what can I do about it if it is?

Re: getting phone calls from law office to collect debt

You would need to send the creditor/collector at issue a legal cease and desist letter. This should put an immediate end to the harassing phone calls, and direct the collectors at issue to only contact you via written correspondence. If you would like our further assistance in fighting this collector, email us with your request.
