Re: Telephone Calls From Creditors
The Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act provides that a creditor cannot disclose to third parties that they are contacting you about a debt, and also provides that you can request in writing for the creditor to not contact you by telephone at work, or to contact you at all if you dispute the debt until the creditor can provide documentation to support the debt.
Therefore, if a creditor is calling your workplace, telling your co-workers that they are a creditor, etc., then there may be code violations that may subject the creditor to sanctions. You can contact a local attorney or the State of Maine Office of Consumer Credit Regulation to get more information about the statute regulating debt collectors.
