Legal Question in Family Law in Maine

college age daughter

I was divorced in 1994. I have custody. I have never had the amount amended. Now my daughter is 17 1/2 and I am afraid my ex will no longer support, carry insurance for or help with college for her. Can I file an appeal to change this or is it a done deal with 18 being the age of amancipation?

Re: college age daughter

There is no legal responsibility to provide support after the age of 18 or graduation from H.S. (if that is later), therefore your ex cannot be forced to provide support, money for college, etc as part of a post divorce proceeding. However, there is the obvious moral obligation and tha fact that by not participating he may further destroy his chances of having a positive adult relationship with his daughter if she resents him for not helping out when he could.
