engagement ring

my daughter was given a ring at christmas meant as an engagement ring. My daughter no longer wants to marry this person. Can she keep the ring since it was wrapped and given as a gift for Christmas?

Re: engagement ring

Believe it or not, there is a fair amount of case law on this subject: your daughter should probably return the ring. Engagement rings are conditional gifts; that is, they are gifts conditioned on the promise to marry someone. If the marriage is called off, the condition is not met, and the ring should be returned.

Probably not the answer you want to hear, I know, but I hope you appreciate the straight answer.
