Legal Question in Family Law in Maine

residency requirements

I was born in NJ but now live in

Maine. Someone told me I could

file for divorce in NJ since it is my place of birth. Is this true?

Re: residency requirements

No, that is not true. The place of your birth does not determine jurisdiction. If both you and your husband have been resident in Maine for 6 months or more, Maine is the place to file. If your spouse is living in another state, that other state could also be appropriate.
