Legal Question in Family Law in Maine

Temporary Guardianship of a Minor Child

My sister wants her daughter to come and live with me for the rest of the school year because she is having trouble in school and I am a stay at home Mom who can help her. The school says she can't be enrolled unless I have guardianship of her, is there a way to do this without involving the courts and lawyers? She will only live with me during the school week and for the next 6 months only. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Re: Temporary Guardianship of a Minor Child

The short answer, unfortunately, is no. A guardianship requires an order from the appropriate Probate Court. The matter can move quickly as long as it is unopposed, but ultimately the school district is going to be looking for an order.
