Legal Question in Immigration Law in Maine
Marriage to a US Citizen
Hello,
I'm a British citizen and have a US girlfriend who I would like to marry, but I have no idea how to do this. I've heard that there is a fiancee visa and you can be married without it, but my question is a bit more involved.
How would I be able to stay in the US once I am married, she has children there so wants me to live in the US, what do I need to do this?
Also, working in the US would I need to become a citizen, or could I simply be a resident and still hold British citizenship?
Thanks in advance!

You would enter on the K fiance visa and marry within 90 days. After that, you would adjust your status and live and work in the US by applying for work authorization.

Once you enter on a fiance visa, you will have 90 days to marry. Thereafter, you will need to apply for permanent residency. Citizenship is optional as you may remain a permanent resident and maintain your British citizenship.
Some people attempt to enter on a visitor's visa and then marry. Although some people manage to get their cases approved, this is not a legal route and could potentially complicate your case. The only way to avoid the fiance visa is to get married in Britian and then consular process.
