Is it fraudlent to claim house contents that are not yours due to a house fire?

Generally, knowing misrepresentation of a loss is insurance fraud which is subject to felony prosecution in most jurisdictions. If you list loss contents other than your own, they should be clearly marked as such. You should also explain why those items were in your house at the time of the fire. Certain items may be covered under your policy.
