Renter Fire Insurance Claims

Under what circumstances can a renter make a claim against a Landlords fire insurance? Landlord claims a provision in his policy excluding renter claims. There is one tenant in the only apartment located over a business. A fire originated in the business, with no specific known cause, possibly electrical. The fire distroyed the business, and the renter sustained $20,000 in property damage. Does the renter have a claim? The renter has no insurance to cover the damage.

A renter's personal property is generally not covered by the landlord's insurance. You can make a claim with the insurance company, and see what happens. Your lease may also have language stating that the landlord is nor responsible for damage to your property. Renter's insurance is available to cover a tenant's property.
