Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Maine

Landlord was not notified of hearing

I was sued by a tenant because I did not give back the full security deposit. The tenant sued for double the security deposit. I was not notified of the hearing, therefore did not appear in court. I received the decision, which stated I owed the tentants. It would cost $120. to appeal, which I did not. I now have a disclosure hearing order to pay the tenant their asking amount. What can I do to change this? If I had appeared at the first hearing, I would have won. I sent the tenant a letter with the reason why I did not give back the full security deposit. What is my next step as I feel I do not owe this money to the tenants? Can I sue them for the damage to the apartment, storage for items left, etc.?

You need to reopen the case.

I can assist but you need to act quickly, because the statute requires that reopening a judgment be accomplished with due diligence.
