Legal Question in Personal Injury in Maine

Injured in rear-end collision

I was injured in a rear-end collision (other driver at fault) on 11/14/02. I was taken by ambulance, treated and released. I had a swollen nose, cut (about 1 inch long) under my bottom lip, several cuts inside of my mouth and 2 loose teeth. I also have some upper back pain and ''clicking'' in my jaw. The cut under my lip has left a scar and I currently have not regained feeling in that part of my lip. The healing process was painful. Eating and drinking painful and I still have swelling on the inside of my lip. I have told the insurance adjuster that I am unwilling at this time to discuss any thing to do with my injuries until I know the long term effects (possible root canal, permanant nerve damage in lip and facial scarring). Do you feel that if we retained a lawyer that I would be able to get a better settlement (even with the lawyers fees) than if I went at it on my own? What is fair compensation for the lost feeling in my lip and facial scarring? Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Lisa

Lisa,

The quick answer is, yes, you will probably get more satisfaction if you enlist the help of a competent attorney on your side.

More specifically, an attorney can assist you in dealing with insurers (both yours and the other side), paying bills, collecting important information, and negotiating full compensation for your damages.

As for the amount to seek, that can only be addressed with much more information and only after your recovery is more stable. The most important thing is to get the appropriate medical attention now.
