Mechanic's Lein

My father owns a old mill, and signed a purchase agreement with a developer, the developer hired architects to lure in financiers. the architects are now suing my father for work he did not ask for, see or benefit from. They're asking for 200,000 what rights do they have to hold my father accountable for someone elses benefit?

The basic premise of a mechanic lien is that if someone is hired to improve a property and they are not paid, either by the owner or the general contractor, they can lien the land. That general protection applies to architects. However, it is assumed that the owner knew of the work in some way, or at least should have known under the circumstances. It will be important to read the contracts with the developer. Your father should contact an atty as the lien could be legitimate, but there may also be defenses.
