Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maine

Property Tax Is Not Assessed Correctly

We have received are tax bill, this is the 3rd time in the last 3 years we have received a bill for just the cost of the land and not the land and the building we have built on it. My question is does our town have any recourse to try and receive the past taxes posibbly owed for the last two years as well as this year. What happens after the bill is sent? Every year we pay what it shows. What if the town determins we owe more and we should have paid more the last two years?

Re: Property Tax Is Not Assessed Correctly

As a general principle, the assessor has the statutory ability to issue supplimental assessments up to 3 years after each assessment to correct errors, omitted property, etc.

As to what your course of action should be at this time, I suggest that you seek the advice of local counsel.
