Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maine
I recently moved out of my apartment on short notice. I was renting month to month without a signed lease agreement. The landlord wanted 60 days notice which I did not give. The landlord now wants me to pay for the 60 days even though I am no longer in the apartment. Am I obligated to pay for the extra 60 days?

Generally in a situation without a lease, you are required to give at least 30 days notice, but that is controlled by the rent payment due date. So if you pay rent on the 1st of the month, and wanted to be out Feb. 1, you would need to have given notice by Jan. 1. So a Jan. 10 notice would only allow a March 1 move out, not Feb. 10 since it is after the January payment due date.
