Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Maine

upon death of a non-us citizen

My 80+ mother has lived in the US since she was 22, still has a green card. She was married to a US Citizen for 50 years, her husband has since passed and she does collect SS. My question is when she dies does she have to pay anything to the Canadian Govt? She has no real-estate only IRS, bank accounts and some stock all US funds in a trust account. Someone told her recently when she passes the Canadian Govt gets some of her estate. She has a Will in the US.

When my mother passes away does this have to be probated in US courts and also with Canada?

Re: upon death of a non-us citizen

I know the estate will need to be Probated in Maine, and if all the assets are located in Maine or the US I am having difficulty with the notion that the Canadian government has the standing or authority to assert entitlement to her estate. I have not dealt with that in my practice.
