Who is legally responsible for a dead person's bills?

The estate of that person. No living person is responsible unless they co-signed or guaranteed the debt. If the debt is secured by property like a car or real estate, then the creditor can take that property ahead of a beneficiary unless the debt is paid off to remove the debt.
