heirloom ring

Mom passes away. Leaves behind heirloom ring. Does son & wife receive it over granddaughter?

If there is no Will, and no evidence of a gift made of the ring during Grandmother's life, then son has the right to it under Maine intestate statute, and granddaughter does not.
