Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Maine

In-Law Apartment

I recently built an in-law apartment/addition for my father in-law. Seventy five percent of the cost of this addition was paid for by my father in-law. If he passes away can his other children come after me for the money he paid into the addition?

Re: In-Law Apartment

They could file a claim within the estate that there was undue influence on your part, the "transfer" or "gift" of the funds was improper for your benefit, etc. If your fatherinlaw wants to avoid that he can go to a lawyer and write up an agreement that will document the situation and defeat such claims.
