Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Maine

I live in Maine. I am transgendered, but chose not to complete the transition because of significantly negative public reactions. I've resolved myself to living in my original gender. In applying for jobs, I've been penalized when companies do background checks on my... I've been offered several positions "contingent on passing a criminal and background check", I have no criminal background, and the only other "background" item that might ever be considered "iffy" by some of the populace is evidence of my legal name change when I began transitioning a dozen-plus years ago, followed by a legal name change back two years later when I wasn't able to hold up to the social pressure. OK, as I've said, I've resolved myself to living in my original gender.

I have no criminal background and I've led a model life other than attempt to gender-transition. I'm not trying to evade financial responsibilities (all paid up), so the only thing that I've seen raised eyebrows at is my gender history... and NO, I have no interest in pursuing gender discrimination cases. I just want to get on with living.

SO is there a way for me to legally change my name and get a new Social Security number... so that, when I apply for jobs, I'm not penalized when companies do background checks?

This is an interesting question. I have checked around with colleagues and none of us are aware of any mechamism for you to obtain another Social Security number.
