I paid someone for a few days of work painting a house with me, he fell off a ladder and now wants to sue me, can he?

Yes. There are lots of things to consider, and I don't have the facts. I suggest that you open a workers compensation claim immediately. If the injured person was an independent contractor, then you should refer this to your liability insurer. Also, you should check to see if the ladder was defective, and also determine how it fell.
