I would like to change my first (given) name for reasons of preference only, is this possible and how do I go about doing so?

Re: Legal Change of First (Given) Name

To change your name in MD, you file a petition in the circuit court for the county in which you reside. You have to publish notice in a local newspaper and the court then orders the change if there are no objections. The petition must state your name, address, place of birth, any other names ever used, the reasons for the change, and a certification that you are not requesting the change for an illegal or fraudulent purpose. If you are a minor, there are other requirements. See Rule 15-901 of the Maryland Rules (of Court).
