The answer depends on the type of tax lien. If property, and the Petition to Foreclose Right of Redemption has not been granted, you can pay the taxes off (plus the purchaser's interest, fees, etc.) or file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy to pay these sums off over time. If a federal or state income tax lien, it might be too late.

Speak with an experienced bankruptcy attorney for more information.

If you mean an ordinary tax sale (for not paying last year's real property taxes), then you can contact the county/city tax sale office to get the amount needed to redeem. A tax sale purchaser must by law wait six months after the tax sale before they can file suit to stop (or foreclose) any rights to redeem. Even after a lawsuit has been filed, so long as the court hasn't entered judgment yet the owner can redeem by paying the back taxes, interest and certain attorney fees and costs of the purchaser. However, if the court has entered final judgment forever foreclosing the rights to redeem, there is little to do. You're encouraged to immediately contact the county tax sale department and/or an attorney to see what stage this is in.
