Legal Question in Business Law in Maryland
Cancellation of Contract for Products and Services
I recall reading that I have 3 business days to cancel a contract. I recently entered into a contract with Brinks to have an alarm system installed. I still want a system but only the basic features rather than all of the bells and whistles I originally requested in the contract.
Also, they ask or require a 3-year monitoring contract. What do I have to do to cancel this contract?

Re: Cancellation of Contract for Products and Services
The MD law you are referring to pertains to what are known as "door-to-door" sales. If Brinks first established contact with you by coming to your home or by a telephone solicitation with a follow-up home visit, then this would apply, and your contract should have specific information informing you of your cancellation rights and the procedure for doing so. If, however, you initiated the sales process by going to a Brink's commercial facility, and then they came out to your house, this may not qualify, although there may be a federal law which protects you. Read your contract, and if the cancellation language isn't there, call Brinks and tell them you want to cancel before any installation takes place, and follow it up with a letter.
