Can I deposit a check without losing my ability to persue a client if I dispute the final amount I need to pay bills with the funds I received

If there was an undisputed amount owed to you by the client, and he/she simply sent you a lesser amount without any prior understanding that you would accept the lesser amount as a final payment, you can still pursue the client. However, if there was a genuine dispute as to how much was owed to you, and the client sent you an amount less than what you had billed for as a compromise, your acceptance of it could bar you from collecting anything more.
