Legal Question in Business Law in Maryland
From Club to Business
I am a consultant/life coach to a group of women who want to solicit members, meet informally for discussions and design their own products for sale, among other things. Must we form a non profit? How should we formally/legally organize? Thank you.

Re: From Club to Business
You need not form a non-profit, this is but one of several options for the group. I would need to hear more about the purpose of the group as well as the individuals who are participating.
Where product designs and processes are discussed there needs to be appropriate by-laws. The form of business chosen will prevail with laws as applicable. Protection of individual rights of ownership may be something that is important.
Your question presents several issues that are intertwined to include the fundamental of solicitation of new members and the rights/responsibilities of existing members. Given the objectives of products to be offerred for sale there is potential intellectual property rights.
The articles of organization and by-laws should be prepared so that they are tailored to current needs while allowing for certain future needs.
