My school has a turtle as a mascott. I want to use another type of turtle on my sales ads and I want to know if I violate any copyright laws?

In general if you are going to use a turtle as a logo, make sure it can be distinguished from what the Terps use i.e. different colors, different name,etc. Then take it the next level and apply for a trademark and protect your logo from trademark infringement. Doing your best to strongly align your product with your turtle logo will help create a distinct image associated only with your turtle.
