Can I get a copyright on a poem which my Great-grandfather wrote?

Re: copyrights
You can obtain a copyright on a poem. You would not necessarily need to obtain a copyright to illustrate the poem in a children's book; however, if you are going to take the time and effort to illustrate the poem then a copyright will provide an avenue to sue for damages where someone else takes your idea and adopts it within their work without permission.
