Legal Question in Business Law in Maryland

Laptop computer abandoned by company?

I started a job and after the 1st week

of training I realized it wasn't for me.

They gave me a laptop during that

training and I've tried to meet the

hiring mgr to give it back (so I can

get a signed receipt of return) since I

left in July of 2006. When is this

laptop considered abandoned

property by the company?

Re: Laptop computer abandoned by company?

This is actually property law and not business law. Nonetheless, since you received the laptop in July 2006 - two and one-half years ago - the laptop is considered abandoned property if they did not request its return. Please check any employment agreement or receipt you may have signed (if any) when you received the computer for a statement of what should happen to company property should the employment not continue. To cover yourself, I would send a letter (certified mail, return receipt) to the company (whoever is the supervisor of the department you worked for at that time) acknowledging that you still have the computer, and you received no response to your attempts to return it. I would also add that you will consider it abandoned property if they do not contact you by xxx date (give them two weeks from the date you send the letter) requesting its return. Keep copies of everything.
