Legal Question in Business Law in Maryland
product coverage
We purchased a washing machine from Best Buy 5 months ago. We purchaced no additional warranties. We do have the reciept. The machine has already stoped running and the company will not replace it. I thought if you had the receipt, that the company had to replace any faulty items within the first year of purchase.
Is there anything we can do?

You should not have to suffer with a bad machine! You have the mnfter's warranty..pls. read it...also, pls. call the Mgr. of the store & complain..AND also send him a letter..with a copy to the Md. Attorney General's office..and the county's D.A.'s office ,,tooo..good luck!!!
Re: product coverage
Washing machines and other kinds of large appliances invariably come with manufacturers warranties, usually at least 1 year from date of purchase. Have you tried calling the manufacturer's customer support department? They will probably put you in touch with a local repair facility that services their products. If the machine can't be fixed, they'll generally replace it. There is no law which automatically requires a retailer to replace a product that fails in the first year. However, all products come with what are known as implied warranties of merchantability, meaning they are assumed to work properly if you use them as contemplated.
When a product used properly fails, the purchaser has a right to sue the seller under this implied warranty if the seller won't voluntarily take care of the problem. But your best bet is to contact the manufacturer if you are still within the written warranty period that would be spelled out in your manual.
