Can an employee of a company sign on and be held responsible for a lease/rent for the company?

If the employee was acting as an agent on behalf of his employer, and that fact is known to the landlord's representative, the employee is not responsible to the landlord. If the employee was not acting at the behest of the employer, then he could potentially be responsible.
