Interesting question. If the property is being paid for through a rent-to-own program, the friend / gift giver doesn't really own it. As a result, they can only "give" what they do have, which is a limited right to use the item as long as payments are being made. Ordinarily one doesn't need to give back a gift but under these circumstances the recipient would be better off returning the "gift" and declining any future "gifts" that the giver doesn't own outright.
