Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Maryland

Hello, my Grandfather was in the hospital and asked me to have his taxes prepared and submitted, but he passed away before my appointment. He did not have a will. Am I able to get his taxes prepared? We really need the money to pay his hospital bills.

Someone will need to open up an estate. The law specifies who has priority to serve as personal representative if no one was appointed by will. It also specifies a procedure and priority for paying the medical bills of the decedent and distributing assets. Note that the law requires debts to be paid in a certain order if there is not enough money to go around.

Once a personal representative is appointed, that person can (and must) file tax returns.

You may want to talk with an estate attorney to discuss the process of opening up an estate. While this post is not legal advice, I do hope that it helps.
