Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland

Call asking For Human Resources Number

I just received a call from what I believe to be a creditor, they would not identify themselves. I told them my name, they said it had nothing to do with me and wanted the telephone number of my human resources department. Can they try to contact my employer concerning my debt? I thiught this was illegal? The woman finally hung up saying I was not being coorperative, I kept on asking her to indentify who she was working for.

Federal and State law prohibits such contact and proscribe civil remedies. Contact an attorney if you are confronted with illegal debt collection practices.

No. A collector in Maryland, which includes the creditor, may not contact an employer unless they have a judgment against you. This is a violation of Maryland Commercial Law Article section 14-202(5).
