Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland

A company is calling stating they are a third party collection agent. They state I owe $400 to them for an outstanding loan. I have an issue with it. I have asked them for a local phone number from the state they calling from, a mailing address and fax number. I also asked for a copy of the paperwork for this loan or whatever was passed to them from the other party. I was told due to legal policy and procedures they dont have to send the information or give me any information. Is this true and am I expected to pay a loan that I am unsure I even owe? Please help. They also threatened me with a court summons and they are very rude.

You are handling this the correct way. You should continue to document the calls they are making and the requests you make of them. You are within your rights with what information you have requested from them. See my blog post on this topic for a more detailed explanation on what to do when debt collectors come calling:

Good luck.
