Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland

debt collection from a relative

My sister was sick, and her husband left her. I helped out by helping her with things that she needed. She had MD. I installed a phone in my name. Her husband returned and after she died i informed her husband that i will leave it on until funeral arrangements are made. He was to pay the bill when his insurance came through (over $4,000). The bill is over $300. The phone company is coming after me.

Re: debt collection from a relative

The phone is in your name and accordingly you are liable for the charges unless you can show that the charges were not authorized.

Given the facts you present, showing the charges were not authorized may be difficult and the phone company is likely to hold you to payment.

You could file a small claim to recover against your brother-in-law or simply try to get him to pay for the charges he incurred.
