Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland

Debt Collection

I reside in New Jersey. In 1998 &99 I was living in Maryland. I lost my job job & was forced to move leaving behind some unpaid bills.

The bill in question is a unpaid phone bill that is over 8 years old.

Last week I received a letter from a collection angency demanding payment. My oral contract was with bell Atlantic which was purchased by Verizon. My question is this.

Is there a statute of limitations on debt collecting on phone bills over 8 years old? And what can I expect next?

Thank You.

Re: Debt Collection

It gets a little complicated, but the short answer is that the longest statute of limitations that could apply is 6 years. If you made some payments, the time limit starts again.

Still, it sounds likely this claim is stale and can not be pursued. If they file suit, and the amount is worth it, please do get help from a lawyer.

I am responding based only on the little bit of information you gave. A consultation would be needed, and more information, before I could answer your specific question.

Re: Debt Collection

In Maryland the statute of limitations is three years. If you acknowlege the debt then the statute of limitations begins again. If you need additional assistance, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].
