Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland

What are the Exemptions from GARNISHMENT of wages?

My friend in Maryland, whom I am advising, is facing

garnishment in the near future of his wages earned from a

public school in Maryland, for a debt in Virginia that

has been domesticated in Maryland. I don't believe that

the creditor has his address in Maryland.

He is paying child support and he maintains a second

residence in South Carolina because he is required to have

a residence nearby his ex-wife to be able to exercise his

rights to visitation, to have the child visit him, with

their 3-year-old son. As a result, he has NO surplus

funds after paying his normal expenses plus the child

support and second residence required for child visitation.

The child support is not currently being deducted from

his salary, but he is paying it himself directly.

What exemptions can he claim from garnishment of his

salary? Can he exempt the child support even though he

is paying it directly, not through a payroll deduction?

How can he fix that situation? Can he exempt his child

visitation expenses?

He has no other assets.

Why are you "advising" this person? Do you have a license to practice law in MD?
