Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland
Judgement Dimissal
A judgement was placed on my credit report based on wrong information. After disputing with creditor the creditor acknowledge that the incorrect amount was forwarded to the collection attorney. A letter indicating this was forwarded to both me an the attorney...since court date was already set I was advised by an attorney (prepaid legal)to go to court and pay the agreed upon amount. In additon, prior to the case being called the attorney's representing the creditor advised me to pay the new amount plus court cost and once the check cleared the judgement would be dismissed. However, the judgement remains on my credit report. What can I do?

Re: Judgement Dimissal
Essentially it appears that the attorney through the pre-paid service did not want to contest that matter, it was simplier, cheaper, and easier for him/her
to tell you to go to court and consent to judgment instead of oppose it. Pre-paid legal service is inexpensive and, although I do not have all the facts, it appears that you got what you paid for which is general advice with little service.
Consider a situation where you could have paid the proper amount (assuming that the information used for judgment was much higher than actual) and avoided all of this mess to begin with. Moreover, the incorrect judgment needs to be stricken from your credit report as this may have an enduring adverse effect upon your credit score.
What you can do is go back to the pre-paid legal service attorney and address their poor service in attending to your issue.
