Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland
LIEN without showing on credit report
I sold my property yesterday. Last week I received a letter from a lawyer saying that I owed $1500 in hospital bill 9 years ago. When I got the letter I could not recollect receiving a single bill from this hospital and it has never shown on my credit report and decided to call the lawyer when I finish my running around for the closing.
All of a sudden I noticed the amount was taken out at closing because they put it as a lien on my house title. I was advised to go ahead with the closing and contact the hospital later.
How is it possible I did not receive treatment from this hospital and did not receive any bill and it did not show for once on my credit and then I had to pay it at closing?
What do I do next?

Re: LIEN without showing on credit report
Possibly what happened is that someone with the same or similar name had a judgment entered against them. You need to discuss this with the settlement attorney. If it's not you, they should release the funds to you. If the judgment is in fact against you, but you were never served, you may be able to try to have it vacated. But the cost of doing that may exceed the amount at issue.
