Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland
I moved out-of-state from Maryland 4 1/2 years ago. Out of the blue I get a letter from the "collection agency" representing my former landlord saying that I have a sizable debt with them. I no longer have my rental receipts from that time, and never got a single letter from them until now. I ignored it and they filed a lawsuit to collect. I called the firm and got their printout of my account, which is incorrect. They have reported this to the credit bureaus and now there is a lawsuit. I have since discovered something called a "zombie debt" and have found out that they are over their legal limit to sue--even if the debt was accurate! What do I do? The time limit to respond to court is very near, and I need some advise. Thank-you SO MUCH!

You need to defend the lawsuit and assert the statute of limitations. If you do not assert it as a defense, it is waived. You should probably hire a lawyer to do this, as the alternative (even if you could navigate the legal system yourself) would be to come to Md. for court, perhaps multiple times.
