Payment of a hospital bill

Our son was homeless and 18 yrs old and mentally ill. He committed suicide by jumping off a building. They worked on him for 6 hours to save his life, but he died. We knew nothing of this until a day later. Who is responsible to pay the $8,500 hospital bill? He was not on our health insurance. The hospital sent us the bill.

My condolences on the loss of your child. Your son's estate should be responsible for the debt. You should write the hospital and demand they put in writing the basis of why they believe you have liability for the debt.
