Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland
I received a debt collection letter in my maiden name while on vacation this month. I called to inquire (first time I heard of this) and was told gas and electric bill was due from years ago. I married in 2000 and sold my house thereafter turning off gas and electric and notified post office of new address. I never shirk my responsibilities and wonder if this is a mistake or if there is a statute of limitations on this debt I was not aware of all these years.

Look at the letter, if it states you have 30 days to respond, you should respond by denying the debt and noting some defenses, including statute of limitations and latches.
You may also consider telling the debt collector that you are prohibiting them from contacting you.
If they sue you, don't igore the suit. You might be successful if you challenge the suit. However, once you note the SOL, they may just leave you alone.
