Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland

I received a letter indicating that I owe a few thousands of dollars as an MVA insurance lapse default from the central collection Unit of the state of Maryland. Problem is, I'm convinced I don't owe this debt. Can I send them a request for debt validation letter asking them to prove me that I owe them money and if so how? I am currently living in New york, what would be my options to fight back at this unjustified request?

Thanks.

I would not sugggest that route.

If you have Maryland licence plates in your car, you are required to have insurance.

Unless you can prove one of the folllowing:

1. You do not have any insurance laps

2. Yur car is not longer licenced in MD, or

3. You do not own your car anymore

Then you will probably have to pay the fine. If this does not apply to you, just call them and explain the situation and see what you need to do to remedy the situation. I can assist you if you require an attorney. 410-654-3389 (Alberto Halphen).
