If you don't appear in court, you will be subject to a default judgment.
If you have a valid defense to the debt, other than you cannot pay, you should consider asking for a continuance or requesting an appearance by phone.
If there is a default judgment against you, the creditor can place liens on your assets, including bank accounts. In addition, the company can garnish your wages. Depending on the size of the debt, you may consider speaking to bankruptcy attorney. However, that process should begin before the court date.
