under 18 dating

my mother seems to think that i am doing somthing illigal if i date a 16 year old turning 17 in june i just turned 18 this january, im a senior shes a junior ''4.5 gpa student she is :)'' anyway i love her and would never do anything inapropriate to her, also her parents love me so i guess i have there consent. anyway my mom wants me to have adult supervision cause shes under 18 . I wish she would trust me ... oh well is it legal or no

Here is the relevant statute. It is not illegal, but it is risky.

Under Maryland Criminal Code 3-307 a person may not:

(3) engage in sexual contact with another if the victim is under the age of 14 years, and the person performing the sexual contact is at least 4 years older than the victim;

(4) engage in a sexual act with another if the victim is 14 or 15 years old, and the person performing the sexual act is at least 21 years old; or

(5) engage in vaginal intercourse with another if the victim is 14 or 15 years old, and the person performing the act is at least 21 years old.
