What happens if the plaintiff fails to appear in court and the defendant does appear in a criminal case??

If the complaining witness does not appear, the State will likely ask for a postponement, and maybe a body attachment to bring the witness in involuntarily. However, in some situations, they may just dismiss the charge. This situation, of course, will vary widely depending on the county in which you are going to court and the specific facts of the case.
