Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland
background check leading to termination
I am a 49 year old professional but in my 20s, I was an active alcoholic. I had been charged with DUI and with disturbing the peace and I had a ''boyfriend'' who wanted me to stop drinking and, his solution was to accuse me of stealing his VCR, something I did not do but since I was drunk and did not go to court session, I was found guilty of larceny. I appealed, and had a witness to speak for me and yet the judge wouldn't even consider the case. I quit drinking at 29 and although I had not graduated from high school, I went to community college and earned an A.S. and then to University for a BS and recently completed an MS at Johns Hopkins. I had a job for 5 years at one of the NIH institutes but was shocked when I was laid off a few months ago. I believe it was the result of a new NIH background check including fingerprints. The reason for the new check was a new building that is more secure than the old building. Not long after this check, I was laid off and I think it was due to my history. Is it possible to get these old records removed from my history? I have been a responsible taxpaying citizen and feel it is not right that I am forever condemned because of my youth. Can you help? Thanks

It may be possible, depending on where your case was heard and exactly what happened.
