Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

conflict of interest

my son was involved in a fight and was charged with several charges. the boy that he beat up has a father that does bail reviews for the court so he is well known with the judges and lawyers. the public defenders office will not take the case due to knowing the father and conflict of interest. many lawyers will not take the case either for the same reason. a judge removed himself for the same reason. the public defenders office hired him a lawyer. (doing research i found he also works for district court public defender) if they were going to hire a lawyer for him due to conflict of interest why wouldnt he be able to pick his own lawyer? since the lawyer they gave him works for the public defenders office also wouldnt that be conflict of interest? they gave another boy in same incident a paid lawyer that they also picked.

Re: conflict of interest

It may be a conflict of interest, but it sounds like you are saying that the private attorney previously was a public defender, or that he is a public defender in a different county. I don't see how that would be a conflict. If you are looking for a private attorney who practices in Wicomico County and is not at all involved in the politics of a small town like Salisbury, feel free to contact me anytime.
