Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

Criminal Case

My brother had a preliminary hearing scheduled, for 3 seperate charges, it went to grand jury before the date and now there are 6 charges. Can you explain what this means? Do they have some sort of substantial evidence? What will happen? The new 6 charges are, 2 charges of 2nd degree assault, robbery, burg-4th, use of a handgun and theft 500+, they used to be assault 1st, robbery and burg-4th

Re: Criminal Case

It means the prosecutor was able to present enough evidence to the grand jury for them to issue and indictment under each of those charges.

It does not mean he will be convicted of all charges, just that 'the people' gave the prosecution permission to file the charges. Most importantly, these are pretty serious charges. He needs to get either a private lawyer or a public defender.
